Salmon La Sac Rogaine
Sunday, June 17, 2007, 8 AM map issue, 9 AM start
3-hour, 5-hour and 8-hour categories, and Techno Division (for gear heads who want to use GPS, altimeter, microwave oven, whatever...)
Check-in, Start and Finish at Salmon La Sac trailhead
Map
USGS 7.5' series maps:
- Polallie Ridge and Davis Peak quadrangles, both published 1989, 1:24,000 scale, 40 foot contours, NAD 1927 horizontal datum
- map will be on one sheet, with magnetic north lines drawn on
- some map corrections and annotations will be made
Terrain
The terrain is generally hilly and consists largely of an area of many hills and knolls of various sizes at the Southern end of Polallie Ridge. This area of the terrain is wonderfully detailed and beautiful. Part of it is Wilderness Area and all of it--except for a small area of private lots--is Wenatchee National Forest land. A little over 1 square kilometer of the area, to the NE of the start/finish, is logged. In addition, the course will venture onto the lower slopes of the mountains on either side of the Cle Elum River valley. The terrain has a moderate number of trails and roads, usually in a branching rather than web-like network.
The complex topography can not be rendered comprehensively on a USGS map with a 40 foot contour interval, and it will challenge many participants to distinguish which features in the terrain are mapped. This is the main reason for offering the Techno division.
Here are links to the USGS map and an aerial photo of the terrain.
Course
There will be about 25 checkpoints of varying point values. Some checkpoints will be closer to trails and easier, while some will present a great navigational challenge. There will be at least a couple checkpoints with drinking water. Eric Bone is the course designer.

Driving directions
From Interstate 90, take exit 80 and go North a few miles to State Route 903.
Turn left on SR 903, and follow it for 17 miles (past the North end of Lake Cle Elum) to the Salmon La Sac Forest Service Station, where you should be able to purchase the NW Forest Pass needed for parking (for $5?).
Just after the Forest Service Station, turn left onto Salmon La Sac Road, and follow it for about 1 km (0.6 miles), before turning left and continuing a few hundred meters into the trailhead parking area.
The trailhead parking lot is small, so please carpool. If it fills, additional vehicles will have to park at the Sno-Park (gravel pit) about 2 miles / 3 km away and get a lift with someone to the event site.
Camping and Lodging
Camping
The nearest place to stay to the event site is the Salmon La Sac campground (on the rogaine map and 1-2 km walk from the start), but there are other campgrounds along highway 903 between Roslyn and Salmon La Sac.
- Reservations for Salmon La Sac -- 5/29 UPDATE: "Salmon La Sac has about 60 sites in operation (they were under construction last year). However, they are all first come first serve (no reservations being accepted). The reservation website will show all reserve-able sites as 'unavailable'." --from a participant who tried to reserve online.
- Other camping options in the Cle Elum Ranger District of the Wenatchee National Forest
Other lodging
The logding page of the Cle Elum - Roslyn Chamber of Commerce has information on many establishments.
Other information
- Light refreshments will be available at the finish (but there will not be a full-fledged hash house)
- Teams looking for another rogaining opportunity are encouraged to try the 4th D AR Rogaine on June 9.
Rules
- International rogaining rules will be the basis for the rules of this event.
- Teams may have 2-5 people. Solo participants are allowed in the 3-hour category, but not in the 5-hour and 8-hour categories.
- Part of the course is in Wilderness Area, so we ask that you do your part to observe the group size restrictions by not traveling with other teams, at least in the Northern part of the course. If you find yourself with another team, please pause and let the other team move away.
- Teams will be asked to submit an intention sheet (planned route) before embarking on the course.
- Teams must carry whistles, adequate water carrying capacity, and jackets or emergency blankets.
